BIOGRAPHY


Juana Rodriguez, (Rome, 1979) Jazz singer and actress ,born in Italy grown up in Chile and Spain and at present rooted in New York , begins going to singing classes at the age of 8 ; that’s when she took her first steps in Music.

Influenced since she’s 10, but with her own style, by Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald in modern singing and classically by Kiri Te Kanawa,Sumi Jo,Cecilia Bartoli,Victoria de los Angeles, Mirella Freni,Renata Scotto,listening to them all on her record-player at home.

In 1988 she starts devoting herself exlusively to the training of her instrument; the voice, by exploring different styles within "BLACK MUSIC"; jazz soul blues funk r&b bossa and "OPERA", giving always priority to jazz and opera.

Musical studies, of modern and classical voice,musical language, directed audition, harmony, music lessons in group, piano, duoble-bass, drums, percussions, history of classical and modern music etc... at

FONDART Winner of the price of MUSIC in Chile, year 2006 and scholarship to live in Newyork and work on the Scat-improvisation method, with the Jazz singer Jay Clayton.


Outside the musical territory she is Actress of MOVIES DUBBING.

- She realized several musical projects in computing, edition and composition for producers in Movies and Music.

In june of 2006, launches her first Jazz production "Speak Low" ,recorded at the sudios of Albert Moraleda and edited under same brand , acompanied by great musicians; Joan Chamorro at Baritone sax, Agata Palencia at Piano, Drums with Alberto Cabello , and Double bass with Nuno Torres.


In the record you can listen at jazz standards such as "Round Midnight" by Thelonious Monk, "My Romance"by Richard Rodgers or "All of me" by Seymour Simons, as well as Bossa nova themes such as"Desafinado" by Antonio Carlos Jobim and "Samba triste" by Baden Powell.

In september of 2006, she travels to New York in order to promote it and to continue increasing her artistical carreer.


Her vocation is to go on developing her carreer as a Soprano lyrical singer and modern Jazz singer, keeping clearly in mind the difference between both techniques and continuing on both paths simultaneously, as she has the capacities, knowledge and sufficient conditions to do it.
She has passion and enough enthusiasm to go on building, cleaning and developing her instrument; the voice, to sing and keep on producing different projects, improving her sound and scene interpretation.

YES, SINCE MANY YEARS IT FASCINATES ME, I’VE STUDIED WITH BIG MAESTROS AT GREAT SCHOOLS AND I’VE LEARNED A LOT,THERE ARE SO MANY GENIUS OF COMPOSITIONS, TO SING OPERA AND TO SING JAZZ IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, NOT ONLY FOR THE TECHNIQUE BUT THE STYLE, THE SENTIMENT,THE EMOTION,YES OPERA FULFILLS ME AS MUCH AS JAZZ DOES.

-HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR VOICE ?

THE VOICE IS A FISICAL INSTRUMENT, EVERYTHING AFFECTS US, THE CLIMAT, HAPPINESS,THE EMOTIONS,THE MOOD, SADNESS,LOVE,ANYTHING ...THERE ARE ACTORS OR SINGERS THAT HAVE AN INCONSCIOUS APPROACH TO THEIR INSTRUMENT, THE VOICE REQUIRES MANY AND CONSTANT REGARDS,HOW I USE TO TELL MY STUDENTS,IT’S NOT AN ORDINARY INSTRUMENT ,IT’S NOT LIKE A GUITAR WHICH YOU OPEN,YOU ATTUNE AND IF A STRING BREAKS YOU JUST CHANGE IT..UNFORTUNATELY THE VOICE DOESN’T WORK LIKE THAT...BUT THE POSITIVE THING IS THAT YOU CAN BRING IT ALONG WHEREVER YOU GO, AND THAT’S A PRIVILEDGE.
MANY YEARS AGO I STARTED PRACTISING WITH MY VOICE EVERY MORNING WHEN TAKING A SHOWER,STEP BY STEP I WAKE UP MOVING MY JAW,SINGING SLOWLY AND SOFTLY, THEN I WORK OUT ONE HOUR WITH MY TRAINER AND THEN I GO TO MY FLAMENCO LESSONS; THEN I PRACTISE ON MY VOCALISMS FOR 30 MINUTES,INCREASING ON INTENSITY GRADUALLY AND THAT’S WHEN I START STUDYING AND MY WORKING DAY BEGINS. I DO SOME MEDITATION 3 TIMES, IN ORDER TO RELAX AND RECHARGE MY ENERGY. THAT’S HOW I HAVE A VOICE AT A 100% STATE .

IT’S HARD TO PREPARE OUR VOICE CAUSE IT’S AN ABSTRACT INSTRUMENT.
PLATO ONCE TOLD THAT ¨¨ THE VOICE IS THE FIRE OF OUR SOUL¨¨TO THE GREEKS TO INSERT THE MUSIC IN THE SPIRIT WAS A VIRTUE .

Short resume of MUSICAL studies:

Begins studying modern singing at the age of 8 at the ¨Academia de Canto de Alicia Puccio¨Academy; simultaneously she takes guitar and flute classes at the ¨Escuela Moderna de Música¨ school in Santiago de Chile.
When 12 she suspends her singing and technical vocal classes, due to the change of her voice and the growth of her vocal organs, and takes advantage in doing an intensive singing training course and modern repertory without vocal technique, in Ciudad de México with Alejandra Cruz, teacher of big mexican musicians.
She goes back to studies at the age of 13 at the ¨Escuela de Música Projazz¨school. From this point she begins her vocal carrer. Simultaneously after 4 years of studies at the ¨Projazz¨school, she does lyrical singing classes with the Soprano Patricia Herrera.
At the age of 17, after finishing secondary school, she begins her carrer with formal and professional studies,at the ¨Escuela Moderna de Música¨school of Santiago, where she does modern singing classes, directed audition, course of latinamerican music, musical language, piano, rythm and tuning. At the same time she continues with the classical studies with Soprano Patricia Herrera accompanied by pianist.
After 5 years of studies and repertory with professor Herrera, she does classical singing classes with the tenor Jose Quilapi, and modern singing classes with Arlette Jequier, the singer of the jazz-fusion chilean group¨Fulano¨.
She attends theatrical classes as well with the interpretation professor Marcela Schultz, making part of a Company named ¨Las Prímulas¨.

During 1999 she intensively travels around Europe making contacts and musical and artistic activities.
After this experience, in 2000 she decides to settle in Barcelona-Spain in order to enforce her musical studies.

The first years in Barcelona she does studies of musical refinement at two schools.
One classical , the ¨Escuela de Música Juan Pedro Carrero¨ school, where she studies and obtaines a superior degree in lyrical singing with the Soprano professor María Luz Martínez and repertory with the modern singer, composer and pianist Leonardo Botaiolli.

For many years she was a pupil of lyrical professor, Italian Micaela Giorgianni and of modern singing professor, Susan Dunk, form Newyork.
Simultaneously, at the jazz school¨Escuela de Jazz Taller de Músics¨ of Barcelona,she studies piano, drums and musical language. Besides she studies jazz double bass with professor Nuno Torres.

Outside the musical territory she is Actress of MOVIES DUBBING.
